Recently I wrote an article on the format of a winning resume. While the content was straight forward I decided to add a few Do’s and Don’ts, a set of rules and broad guidelines of the things you should stay far away from when constructing your resume.
Include the Why!
Do…
- Keep a clean format that flows (more simple, less colours the better)
- Keep your contact always visible at the header
- Keep it succinct
- Keep it professional – take out slang, right click synonyms if you are struggling for a word
- Take them on a journey with your experience
- List the important things first!
Put in the WHYS!!!!!!
Don’t…
- Use a CV/ Resume Builder. The people reading it know you’ve used it and it performs as well as the dance routine from Bring it on with Sparky Polastri
- Write CV/ Cover Letter on the document. I would hope that you or the people need reminding of what they are reading.
- Include your address
- Include a photo of yourself. Unless modelling you don’t need this.
- Add a linkedin link. Use Linkedin as a platform to contact others, there is nothing on your linkedin that shouldn’t be on your resume.
- Include an interests section. No one cares about your hobbies on your weekends. gives you something to talk about in the interview.
- User every industry acronym you know. The hiring manager might know what you are referring to, HR might not. Maybe different industries use different acronyms.
